Title: Digitalizing Sustainability – From Sensors to Insights
Digitalizing sustainability is essential for effective environmental stewardship, yet it faces a fundamental bottleneck: acquiring reliable data from the real world. Deploying sensor networks at scale is hampered by significant challenges, including the high energy consumption of sensor nodes, the need for long-term operation in remote and harsh environments, and poor data quality from low-cost devices. This tutorial reframes the solution. We will demonstrate that sustainable digitalization requires a shift in thinking, from “data collection” to “insight generation”. We will explore a full-stack approach that starts with designing for extreme energy efficiency at the hardware level. We then address how implementing intelligent processing and AI directly at the edge can overcome data unreliability and bandwidth limitations. Finally, we explore the use of large-language models (LLM) for automated insight generation to assist users in understanding sustainability data and generate actionable insights.
